The Nameless
The Nameless are a secretive faction of rogue TRACE users who split from the Tracer Order due to fundamental ethical disagreements. Originally members of the Order, the Nameless rejected the Order’s use of Absolution — a technique used to prevent the manifestation of ALTERs by trapping the souls of the deceased within TRACE Shards. Instead, the Nameless developed their own method, known as Resolution or Resolve, which absorbs the TRACE energy from the deceased directly into themselves, eliminating the risk of an ALTER manifestation while also empowering the practitioner. This distinction reflects the deep moral rift between the Nameless and the Tracer Order, as each faction believes its method is the righteous path.
Origins and Ideals
The Nameless were formed from a splinter group within the Tracer Order, emerging after a bitter power struggle. Their founding members viewed Absolution as a cruel violation of the natural cycle, trapping souls and binding them to TRACE Shards rather than allowing them to pass on. By contrast, the Nameless saw Resolution as a more compassionate approach, arguing that absorbing TRACE energy honors the memory of the deceased by putting their power to a constructive purpose. They believe this act transfers the burden of protection to the living, who now bear the responsibility of the energy they absorb.
The Nameless see themselves as burden-bearers, taking on the pain and power of lost souls to protect humanity. To them, the Tracer Order’s methods represent an institutionalized cruelty that prioritizes protocol over compassion. While the Nameless’ intentions may seem noble, their methods — and the power they amass in the process — have raised ethical concerns and led to widespread distrust.
Absolution vs. Resolution
At the heart of the schism between the Tracer Order and the Nameless lies the distinction between Absolution and Resolution:
- Absolution - Practiced by the Tracer Order, Absolution is a ritual that extracts TRACE energy from a deceased individual to prevent the formation of an ALTER. This energy is contained within a TRACE Shard, effectively trapping the soul of the deceased. The Tracer Order views this method as the safest way to handle residual TRACE energy, keeping it under strict control to avoid corruption. However, the Nameless see Absolution as an inhumane act, arguing that trapping souls in this way is a form of spiritual imprisonment.
- Resolution (Resolve) - Developed by the Nameless as an alternative to Absolution, Resolution absorbs TRACE energy from the deceased directly into the practitioner. By taking this energy upon themselves, the Nameless believe they honor the spirit of the departed while preventing it from becoming an ALTER. They see Resolution as a self-sacrificial act, one that involves personal risk and a profound sense of responsibility. However, critics argue that Resolution is a thinly veiled attempt to gain personal power under the guise of compassion, as it allows practitioners to amass significant energy and abilities over time.
The distinction between Absolution and Resolution encapsulates the moral ambiguity of the Nameless. While their followers claim that they act out of respect for the dead, their growing power and occasional disregard for Order protocols raise questions about whether they are motivated more by self-interest than by altruism.
The Rite of Erasure
When an individual joins the Nameless, they undergo a ceremony known as the Rite of Erasure. This ritual severs ties to their former life, including the erasure of their name and personal history, symbolizing their commitment to the faction’s ideals. Through chants, incantations, and mental conditioning, initiates let go of their identity and assume a new purpose. The Nameless believe that shedding their personal identities fosters unity and reduces the risk of betrayal, as each member is bound only to the group and its mission.
The Rite of Erasure represents the Nameless’ emphasis on shared responsibility and sacrifice. However, critics argue that this anonymity is a means of obscuring accountability, allowing members to act without personal consequence. The Nameless reject this view, claiming that anonymity allows them to focus on their work without ego or attachment, operating solely for the greater good.
Moral Ambiguity
The Nameless walk a complex moral line, driven by ideals that are both compassionate and self-serving. They perceive themselves as saviors who shoulder the spiritual burden of the departed, using Resolution to keep the world safe from ALTERs without what they see as the “soul imprisonment” imposed by Absolution. However, the power they accrue through Resolution and their clandestine methods lead many to question their motives.
Unlike the Tracer Order, which operates within a strict code of ethics, the Nameless embrace moral flexibility, allowing individual members to decide how to best use the power they have absorbed. This independence has led to incidents where members of the Nameless act in ways that seem ruthless or even self-interested, deepening the mistrust between them and the Order.
While the Nameless view their actions as sacrifices for humanity’s sake, their willingness to absorb power rather than contain it places them in a morally gray area. To their followers, they are compassionate protectors; to their critics, they are power-hungry radicals exploiting the dead to further their own ends.
Conflict with the Tracer Order
The Nameless’ rejection of Absolution and adoption of Resolution has led to ongoing conflict with the Tracer Order, with both sides viewing the other as misguided and dangerous. The Order considers the Nameless’ use of Resolution reckless, fearing the potential for TRACE corruption and the unchecked accumulation of power among their ranks. The Nameless, on the other hand, regard the Order as hypocritical and callous, unwilling to question its own practices in favor of preserving tradition.
Both factions believe they are the true protectors of humanity, with the Nameless viewing themselves as the compassionate alternative to the rigid Order. This ideological divide has led to heated, often violent confrontations, with the Nameless seeking to dismantle or disrupt the Tracer Order’s influence wherever possible.
