The Twilight Court is a rumored collective of extremely powerful ALTERs — entities of overwhelming power, believed by some to represent the darkest reaches of TRACE corruption. If it exists, the Court stands in direct opposition to humanity, pursuing an inscrutable agenda that brings chaos and destruction wherever their influence touches. The Twilight Court is so elusive that even the Tracer Order dismisses it as legend, with most considering it a story born from fear of TRACE’s potential for corruption.
The Twilight Court is described as a loose coalition of highly unique, powerful ALTERs, each with distinct abilities and motives. According to lore, the Court’s members act individually yet share a larger, malevolent purpose — one that places them in eternal opposition to humanity’s survival. Some suggest they seek to blanket all existence in TRACE corruption, while others believe their goals are far darker, possibly cosmic in scope.
While solid proof is nonexistent, those who believe in the Court point to areas of TRACE devastation, recurring Voidcracks, and strange patterns in ALTER behavior as evidence of their interference. The Tracer Order, however, attributes these events to natural TRACE phenomena or isolated high-level ALTERs.
Each member of the Twilight Court is thought to possess unique characteristics and abilities, with their individuality intact despite their alignment. However, direct encounters are so rare and fragmentary that most details remain speculative at best. Within the TRACE-sensitive community, the Court is regarded with both fear and skepticism, its members rumored to wield powers that twist and warp TRACE energy itself.
The Tracer Order remains doubtful of the Twilight Court’s existence, viewing it as a cautionary tale. Among some veteran Tracers, however, there lingers a faint suspicion that the Court could be real — a lingering shadow that defies the Order’s control.
One of the few alleged encounters with a member of the Twilight Court survives only in a fragmented, aged account, retold in whispers among Tracers. According to the story, a seasoned Tracer once came across an otherworldly figure near the Shrine of the Fallen. They described the entity as towering, its form cloaked in shadows so dense they seemed to swallow all surrounding light. Its body appeared hollow and insubstantial, as though made of pure darkness, with two piercing violet eyes that burned with an unnatural glow.
The Tracer claimed the figure never spoke but radiated a wave of TRACE energy so powerful it brought fear into their very bones. Then, with a slight movement, the entity raised a hand, and shadows around them coalesced into an icy advance. The Tracer steeled themselves, certain their end had come — yet, just as the shadows closed in, the figure lowered its hand, halting the onslaught. The Tracer was left standing, alive but frozen in terror, as the being turned and vanished into the darkness, leaving only a lingering chill and the weight of violet eyes burned into their memory.
This figure has since come to be known as “The Pale.”
Although direct encounters are largely discredited, some believe the Twilight Court’s presence can be seen in events of extreme TRACE degradation, recurring Voidcracks, and areas overcome by high-level ALTER activity. While these theories are speculative, believers claim such phenomena are the residual effects of the Court’s presence.
Most within the Tracer Order reject these claims, attributing such events to natural TRACE cycles. Yet, stories continue to circulate, fueling whispers that the Twilight Court’s influence may reach further than anyone realizes.
